What is a Silent Piano?

Silent Pianos combine the best of Acoustic and Digital Pianos.

Our prime goal is to ensure that we provide a beautiful acoustic piano, built with the knowledge and skills of over 100 years Yamaha piano history.
Then we add our market leading Silent Piano technology to enable the piano to be played silently using headphones.
When the silent function is activated, the hammers will no longer hit the strings and instead, a highly sophisticated sensor-technology captures all movements of the keys and sends them to the digital tone module. Play a real acoustic piano with headphones at any time, day or night without being disturbed or disturbing others. The Yamaha Silent System is unsurpassed, allowing 24hr practice as well as possessing many other features including a range of pre-installed sounds, being able to record your own performances or connecting mobile devices to use the latest Apps.

Yamaha, the world's leading provider of sound muting technology offers two Silent Piano systems in the range, each with different levels of operation and quality of sound available when in silent mode.

"The SH silent system provides a truly unbelievable quality of piano sound. It's that good you may even find yourself removing the headphones just to make sure you're in "silent" mode!"

Practising anytime, night or day, without disturbing others or being disturbed gives Silent Piano owners a huge advantage. Yamaha's patented Quick Escape Mechanism (GP only) lets you play with the same touch and feel in both acoustic and silent modes.

The totally convincing illusion of sitting at a concert grand in a recital hall is created through headphones by the binaurally sampled Yamaha CFX piano (SH) . A variety of great instrument sounds are included too, as well as a metronome and transpose feature. There's MIDI of course for expansion and, in silent mode customizable brilliance and different reverb types.

  • Unrestricted Touch And Feel
  • When studying the piano, a Yamaha Silent Piano is an ideal choice. At its heart lies a beautiful acoustic piano with a responsive and accurate piano action which Yamaha have become world-famous for.

In every piano with a sound-muting system the hammers need to be prevented from striking the strings. This process influences the striking distance and therefore the touch and feel of the piano is affected.

Yamaha has invented a modified grand piano action part (QuickEscape) which automatically optimizes the striking distance in both acoustic and silent mode.

A natural keyboard touch and response in both modes of play is maintained.

Overview
Hammer Shank Stopper
Key Sensor
Hammer Sensor
Quick Escape

When the silencing function has been engaged and keys are struck, hammer shank stoppers move into place to prevent the hammers from striking the strings. While the piano is outwardly silenced, the movement of the keys and other performance information are picked up by optical sensors and converted to digital data by a tone generator. Digitally sampled acoustic sound is then sent to stereo headphones for the player to enjoy in complete privacy.

Hammer shank stoppers silence acoustic sound when the piano is played in Silent Piano mode. By stopping the hammers just before they strike the strings, hammer shank stoppers ensure that a piano played in Silent Piano mode has nearly identical key touch as that in acoustic mode. These stoppers are fitted with thick double-layered felt so as to thoroughly silence piano sound without damaging the hammers. On SH-type grand pianos, the Silent Piano mode is motor activated by pressing a button on the control panel. On SG2-type grand pianos, the Silent Piano mode is manually activated via a lever. The majority of SH and SG2 upright pianos use the center pedal for manual activation, although some models employ a lever instead.

Key Sensor
Key Sensor

  2. Grayscale shutter
Watch the Video

Continuous-detection optical sensors are used to register the depth and velocity at which keys are depressed. Along with the key sensors, grey-scale shutters are installed under each of the 88 keys (b Series pianos use different shutters). A grey-scale shutter is a small, thin plate whose optical transmission increases towards its bottom. Laser light is constantly radiated inside a key sensor. When a piano key is depressed, a grey-scale shutter blocks that light, with the amount of light blocked increasing in proportion to the depth of the keystroke. Based on the amount and traveling speed of the blocked light, the sensor registers keystroke depth and velocity as well as the timing at which muting should occur. The registered information is then transmitted to the CPU of the control unit.

Hammer Sensor

Non-contact optical hammer sensors with two-point detection are installed on the hammer shanks of grand pianos. These sensors can accurately detect the velocity and timing at which the hammers move. While hammer sensors essentially read the same information as key sensors, the ability to monitor key and hammer movement together adds extra precision to keystroke detection and sound reproduction.

    State: Passive Acoustic Silent

The QuickEscape action mechanism automatically optimizes the striking distance between the hammer and the strings in acoustic and Silent Piano mode, ensuring natural keyboard touch and response at all times. On inferior systems, the keystroke depth of models featuring a silencing function can be limited compared to regular grand pianos without such function. This makes it difficult for pianists to produce fortissimo or to perform as they wish to due to the possibility of keys 'halting' before the full force of their fingertips can be transmitted to the keys. With the employment of the QuickEscape, Yamaha Silent Pianos are the only pianos featuring a silencing function that can optimize keyboard touch in both acoustic and silent modes.

Pedal Sensor
Pedal Sensor
  1. Sostenuto Pedal Sensor
  2. Damper Pedal Sensor
  3. Shift Pedal Sensor

Non-contact optical sensors for monitoring movement of the damper, sostenuto,* and shift/soft pedals are located on the trapwork of Yamaha Silent Pianos.
*Sostenuto pedals are found only on grand pianos and some upright pianos.

Movement of the damper pedal is registered by a continuous-detection optical sensor, which precisely captures subtle details of piano performance, such as the depth of pedal depression, and transmits them to the control unit. Movement of the sostenuto and the shift/soft pedals is registered by on/off optical sensors.

Testimonials

What the professionals say about Silent Piano.

Jamie Cullum

It's genuinely a different experience playing the Yamaha Silent piano - put the headphones on and instead of feeling like the sound is being pumped into your ears it feels so natural, like the sound is dancing around you.

— Jamie Cullum

Bert Smoremburg

When I switched on the Silent mode and played with the new headphone on, I was completely overwhelmed by the fantastic sounding digital piano, the spaceousness and the dynamics. It even made me take off my headphones a few times to double check if I wasnt listening to the acoustic one! I have no idea how they managed it, but with the headphones on I felt like sitting directly in front of a real CFX grand piano.

— Bert Smorenburg, Musician and Yamaha Endorsee

Irene Hierrezuelo Osorio

When I first tried the SH silent system I really could not believe what I was hearing. After the first few notes I had to check that I was in silent mode as the sound was that good it was like playing the piano acoustically

— Irene Hierrezuelo Osorio, Pianist.
