Let’s get on stage! Setting up a DXR12 speaker system.

Let’s get on stage! Setting up a DXR12 speaker system.

In the third chapter of our DXR journey it’s now time for a gig! Let’s recap what you’ll just need for this: Besides yourselves and your instruments, you just need to grab the two DXR12, the tripod stands as well as some TRS and XLR cables for connecting your instruments, mics and the speakers.

In were told in advance, that there’ll be no separate FOH engineer. You will be in charge to do the whole soundcheck and live mix on your own. Of course you could plug in to the DXR12 directly but you decided to take your Yamaha MG12XU mixer from your rehearsal room to make use of some more sound processing features – and off we go to the pub where the gig will take place.

After arriving at the location, the first thing to do is to build up the whole PA/FOH system.

After arriving at the location, the first thing to do is to build up the whole PA/FOH system.

1. Leave enough space between your speakers and the audience to ensure nobody’s accidentally hitting the speaker/pole/tripod.

2. Find a dry and slip-resistant ground surface. If possible, secure the speaker/tripod combination with additional safety belts.

3. Be sure that all your power and signal cables are laid properly and taped to the floor.

Today you’re playing in a pub with a quite low room depth and all your audience is seated. For this certain application you should use the downwards angled pole setting to get your sound radiated to where you need it.

After building up your DXR12 system, simply connect your instruments and speakers to the MG12XU mixer. Let’s recap what we have: The singer’s microphone needs one channel with mic preamp, both acoustic guitars have an integrated preamp-pickup combination, so you won’t need an extra DI box. The guitars lie on channel 2 and 3. The stage piano features a stereo output which is hooked up to stereo line input 5/6.

Next step: Connect the XLR outputs of the MG12XU with the XLR inputs of the two DXR12 speakers. Be sure that MIC/LINE switch is set to LINE. Then set the Level Control in both speakers to the 12 o´clock position.

As your acoustic combo doesn’t have a bass player or drummer, you can set the HPF switch of your first DXR12 to 100 Hz, but also try the other HPF settings - depending on which works best for your style of music. Furthermore, try the D-CONTOUR setting FOH/MAIN for boosting the high and low frequency components of your overall PA sound.

And last but not least: Have fun!

At our fourth and last stop next week, we will add a subwoofer to our DXR12 PA system because a bass player joined our combo and you want to add some extra low-end power to your PA. Stay tuned!
