The Junior Music Course

The "Junior Music Course" forms the basis for the entire teaching given at a Yamaha Music School.

In the "Junior Music Course" the most appropriate teaching content, approach and style of lesson is adopted in line with children’s physical, emotional and intellectual development levels.

Pre-school age children undergo a period of rapid development in acquiring their aural skills. They can immediately memorise whatever sounds and words they hear for the first time. Therefore, if they are exposed to a variety of music by listening, singing and playing at this critical point in their lives, they will acquire a fundamental sense of music that is both solid and balanced

Children who enter the Junior Music Course are aged 4 and 5.

This is the period when children’s sense of hearing develops most rapidly so their ability to recognise sounds through their ears is enhanced. These are ideal conditions to develop absolute pitch, a sense of harmony and develop a recognition of musical phrases and tones. At the same time they are encouraged to learn the basic elements of music - melody, rhythm and harmony, by using keyboard instruments as learning tools.

The goal of the Junior Music Course is to enable children to sing what they hear, to play what they sang, and to make a piece of music themselves, or to express themselves musically using the keyboard as a learning tool.

After 2 years the children move from the Junior Music Course to the Junior Extension Course.
