Versatile listening modes

The YSP-4100 achieves true surround sound by directing sound beams off the walls to reach the listener from various angles. The main mode is 5 BeamPlus2 for 7-channel sources.
In addition, there is a wide variety of other listening modes.
You can select 3 Beam + Stereo + 2, 5 Beam, 3 Beam + Stereo, 3 Beam or Stereo, depending on the type of source and your room acoustics.

Yamaha’s ultra-sophisticated CINEMA DSP technology creates thrillingly realistic soundscapes in any room.
Eleven CINEMA DSP programmes (three Movie, three Music and five Entertainment) are available.

Digital Sound Projector Technology

The YSP-4100 applies this sophisticated technology to precisely control the orientation of the sound by focusing it through multiple beams.
The centre channel sound is heard directly, while sounds from other channels are heard after reflecting off walls.
The result is true multi-channel surround sound that sounds just like a multi-speaker system – but without the need for extra speakers!

Built-In DSP, Speakers and Digital Amplifiers

This slim unit has everything necessary for projecting true surround sound built in: DSP for Digital Signal Processor, 40 beam drivers, two woofers and digital amplifiers.
No other receiver, amplifier or speakers are necessary, making the system extremely compact and economical.
This also makes it handy for use in a different room (zone) in a custom multi-zone system.
What's more, the shape is even thinner (90mm depth) than previous models.

1080p-Compatible HDMI (4 In/1 Out)

The YSP-4100 provides HDMI connections (4 in/1 out), with support for 1080p resolution.
You can connect multiple HDMI sources and enjoy the highest possible video quality when using a 1080p monitor.
It is also capable of repeating 1080p/24fps signals from HDMI input to output, maintaining the superior image quality from Blu-ray Disc players and HDTV set top boxes.
HDMI also provides the benefits of Deep Colour, x.v.Colour and Auto Lip-Sync.

Analogue Video to HDMI Digital Video Upconversion

The YSP-4100 provides upconversion of video composite and component signals to HDMI.
The signal can then be output via a single HDMI cable to a monitor for enjoying high-definition video quality.

IntelliBeam™ Automated System Calibration

This Yamaha exclusive feature ensures optimum multi-channel sound reproduction with accurate image location.
By monitoring and analysing the sound with the microphone included with the YSP-4100, IntelliBeam automatically sets the best beam angles, while optimising the level and frequency response of each beam.
It also offers Direct Start function via remote unit.
This makes initial setup both extremely simple and acoustically perfect.

UniVolume™

This welcome feature, made possible by Yamaha-developed technology, maintains a consistent volume level between different channels, programmes, commercials and input sources.
It can be switched on and off.

HDMI CEC Functionality

When the YSP-4100 is connected to a CEC compatible TV, such as a Panasonic VIERA Link TV, the YSP-4100 will turn on and off together with the TV, and you can use the TV remote unit to control the YSP-4100 volume.
With CEC engaged, signals will pass through the YSP-4100 even if it is off.
CEC also provides advanced functionality with other components.

Music Enhancer

When music is encoded into a digitally compressed format like MP3, the frequency response suffers.
This function restores what was lost, so your music always sounds the way it should.

AirWired Technology for Wireless Connections (optional)

Thanks to Yamaha's AirWired technology, you can use your YSP-4100 with an iPod and subwoofer without having to connect any cables. The AirWired link transmits uncompressed data (linear PCM) so there is no loss of signal data, unlike systems that use Bluetooth technology to send compressed data. This ensures maximum sound quality.
The YIT-W10 gives you wireless connection capability to your iPod. It lets you use the iPod as a remote control while listening to your iPod music, and provides synchronised power on/off. In addition, the iPod charges when it is in the PDX-50BC. The SWK-W10 allows the wireless connection of any subwoofer, highly recommended for boosting bass sound. Both of these kits can be used together; when doing so, turning on the iPod automatically turns on the YSP-4100 and the subwoofer.

Dolby TrueHD

Dolby TrueHD is an advanced lossless audio technology developed for high-definition disc-based media including Blu-ray Disc. Selected as an optional audio standard for Blu-ray Disc, this technology delivers sound that is bit-for-bit identical to the studio master, offering a high-definition home theater experience. Supporting bitrates up to 18.0 Mbps, Dolby TrueHD can carry up to 8 discrete channels of 24-bit/96 kHz audio simultaneously. Dolby TrueHD also remains fully compatible with the existing multichannel audio systems and retains the metadata capability of Dolby Digital, allowing dialog normalization and dynamic range control.

DTS HD Master Audio

HDMI

IntelliBeam

This unit creates a sound field by reflecting sound beams on the walls of your listening room and by broadening the cohesion of all the channels. YSP Technology

Digital Sound Projectors use Yamaha’s proprietary technology to bounce sound focused into beams off walls, producing true multi-channel surround sound.

The primary advantage of the YSP Series is that simply placing a unit in the front of a room provides true surround sound, which you hear from the front and rear and also the left and right. Its key technologies are the production of sound beams via the control of multiple built-in speakers, and IntelliBeam, which automatically sets the optimum sound field for the size and shape of the room. Thanks to these two technologies, the YSP Series can reproduce 7.1-channel surround sound that is natural with an expansive feeling, qualities that cannot be achieved by virtual surround systems.

Beam control technology creates sound beams.

The front surface of a YSP unit features a number of compact beam speakers* installed in orderly rows. Control of each of these speakers on a time axis by individual amps creates five sound beams. Bouncing these sound beams off walls creates a surround environment.

Superimposing sound waves from the compact speakers installed in a row and adjusting their direction by delay control causes the axes of the sound waves to converge in a specified direction.

How the sound beams are created.

Sound produced from the speakers is transmitted radially from the sound source, like an expanding ripple (Fig. 1).

The sound waves from two speakers are superimposed, creating interference (Fig. 2).

If the number of speakers in adjoining locations is increased, the sound waves are superimposed even more, so the sound is transmitted as a single strong wave. This is a sound beam (Fig. 3).

By using a processor (dedicated Yamaha LSI) to control the times when each speaker produces sound, the direction of the sound beams can be controlled (Fig. 4).

Controlling the directions of the beams to bounce them off the walls enables the sound to come from five directions: front left and right, rear left and right, and centre. Models from the YSP-4100 and up create two phantom sound sources in addition to the five beams, to provide 7.1-channel surround sound.

Sound from the speakers is transmitted radially.

Ripples of sound from two adjacent speakers are superimposed, creating interference.

The ripples of sound are further superimposed, creating a single strong wave — a sound beam.

The timing of the sounds from each speaker are delayed, controlling the direction of the beams.

Time control

IntelliBeam automatically sets the listening environment best suited to the room.

When the microphone is placed at the listening position, it searches for the places suitable for reflecting the beams while it checks the size and shape of the room and the quality of the wall material, in order to automatically adjust the beam angle, the volume and the sound quality. This makes it easy to achieve the best surround sound environment.

YSP models achieve real multi-channel surround by, not virtually but actually, bouncing sound beams off walls. This provides three major benefits.

Natural ambience

YSP models naturally expand the sound radiated onto the walls, producing surround sound without the unnatural feeling of sound linkages between the channels.

Wide listening area

YSP models provide ideal family listening, because the listening area is wider than with conventional virtual surround sound.

Less individual differences and listening fatigue.

Ordinary virtual surround systems often sound different to different people because the surround sound is created artificially. This causes some people to become tired of listening after a certain amount of time. With YSP models, sound bounced off walls actually comes from behind the listeners, which means there is little difference in its effect between individuals, and people are unlikely to experience listening fatigue, even after long periods.
