THE YAMAHA MUSIC FOUNDATION OF EUROPE (YMFE) – What is the Foundation about ?

Yamaha, one of the world's largest manufacturers of musical instruments, established the Yamaha Music Foundation (YMF) in Tokyo in 1966. The purpose of this foundation is to stimulate interest in the playing and enjoyment of music amongst people from all over the world.

The Yamaha Music Foundation of Europe (YMFE) is a European organisation that - above all - is dedicated to supporting talented music students in Europe. It is also a non-profit making charity, registered with the UK Charity Commission in 1989 (registration number 801149).

Since 1990, YMFE has awarded scholarships to over 862 outstanding young musicians across 32 European countries.

THE YMFE-SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM – What are the subjects of this program?

The YMFE-Scholarship Competition is open to full-time music students of any nationality studying at a Music Academy or Conservatoire being not older than 25 years at the time.

The Scholarship shows a value of 1.000,00 EUR to 2.000,00 EUR, depending on the country where the applicant is living.

The Scholarship will cover one year, and the money may be used for any purpose related to the advancement of studies. The rewarded discipline changes every year. Applicants will be selected according to their current musical ability and their demonstrated future potential. The basis for this evaluation is an initial screening from a recorded performance, followed by a live performance at the final selection. Selection Committees comprising senior figures from the world of music will select the most suitable applicants. Since 1990 until 2009 there have been Scholarship-Programs in various disciplines from Brass and/or Woodwind, from Piano, to Vocal.

THE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM IN 2009/2010 – What happens next time ?

We are pleased to announce the 21st year of the Scholarship scheme for music students. A total of 37 Scholarships in 25 countries will be awarded to full-time students in 2009/2010.

In 2009/2010, the scholarships’ discipline is Orchestral Strings.
